How to choose between 128 GB and 256 GB iPhone models?

I initially desired a 256GB iPhone 16 Pro in gold color. However, the three T-Mobile stores in my area only offered the 128GB model in gold. Now, I’m using my phone and am concerned about storage. Fortunately, I found a store that has the 256GB model available. I upgraded from an iPhone 12 with 64GB of storage. The primary reasons for the upgrade were storage and the refresh rate. I couldn’t wait any longer.

ChatGPT suggests that with my current storage usage (74GB), a 128GB model can last for five years if I maintain normal storage usage and keep everything the same, even with Apple Intelligence. Additionally, if I advance in my profession, I’ll likely receive a work phone that can offset the storage space.

I’m torn between paying the restocking fee ($70) plus the $100 charge or simply using the 128GB model. I can afford the return, but the promotions were already lower than what I and my primary account holder thought, and I feel guilty encouraging them to spend more. This decision is causing me stress and affecting my enjoyment of my new phone.

Well, it was and is your decision, and your responsibility. I would not have based my buying decisions on ChatGPT output, but that’s just me.

Fear of not enough storage can be real and ultimately tangible if you run out of space on your phone. If this is causing you stress, I'd honestly take the financial hit, and get the phone with more storage as long as it isn't a financial burden. Assuming it's not, you won't regret having a phone with more storage. Personally, I wouldn't buy an iPhone with only 128GB of storage. Said differently, it's NEVER a mistake to buy a phone with more storage than you may need, but it is ALWAYS a mistake to not buy one enough storage.

Unfortunately, once you purchase an iPhone, the storage you purchase is all the storage you get. The best thing to do is to get the most storage you feel you would need. That decision has to be based on what it is that you would be using the phone for. Do you take a lot of photos, do you have a lot of music on your device? For Music, you have the option of Apple Music, which is a paid service, and you can stream your music. Of course there are other streaming options. That keeps you from needing to store music on your device. Photos is generally the thing that takes up the most storage. Messaging as well, since we do share a lot of photos there as well. I have found that a 256 GB device is a great all around choice. I use my iPhone for both work and personal use and have 4 different email accounts on it. Mail can take a lot of storage as well. I use that on both my iPhone and iPad, and have movies downloaded on my iPad and still have only used 147GB of storage on the iPad. The advantage is that I have 108 GB or storage remaining. Without the movies, my iPhone is using almost the same amount of storage.
