Comparing data in columns and/or rows in a numbers spreadsheet
When using excel I am able to compare any combination of columns by dragging a dividing bar across the spreadsheet window. This allows me to compare the contents of the columns side by side in the same window. This is useful if you have very large spreadsheets. For example, I could have columns R to Z on one side of the dividing bar and compare them with columns BA to BG on the other side of the dividing bar. Further, if I wanted to exclude the data in column S from the comparison, I could do that by hiding column S from view. Thus I could compare columns B,M,N,O,P,R,T,W,X by simply hiding the columns that are of no interest at that time with BA to BG
I could also do the same with rows.
Can I do this in 'Numbers'?
I know I can freeze columns and rows and then drag the scroll bar to another part of the spreadsheet but I appear to be restricted to being able to freeze the first 5 columns and rows only.
In the screenshot below I show the EXCEL app in action. I can compare block 1 with 2, block 1 with 3, block 2 with 4 and block 3 with 4. The dividing bars are moveable using the features highlighted by the circles. In effect you can create 2 scroll bars in the X and Y planes of the spreadsheet
The functionality has featured in EXCEL probably since launch - I have been using it since 1989! I think it is core functionality for a spreadsheet. However, I can't work out how to do it in Numbers. Apple support on the telephone can't help me. They don't think it is possible.
Any Ideas?
At the moment I am using an old MacBook with the EXCEL app downloaded on that machine. I would rather not have to purchase the EXCEL app for my new machine since numbers can do most of what I need from a spreadsheet app. However, the comparison functionality is a must for me. If the software cannot do it at present, any ideas on how I make the suggestion for new functionality to the apple development teams?
Best regards to the world!
