Hi there 👋
Great question — and I completely understand the frustration. It does seem a bit counterintuitive when you’re asking about another place, yet Siri insists on knowing where you are.
Siri uses your current location not just for proximity-based suggestions, but also to tailor responses based on context, time zone, language settings, and even regional variations in services. So even if you ask, for example, “What’s the weather in Tokyo?”, Siri may still rely on your location to fine-tune how it fetches and delivers the data — especially when that information involves local services like restaurants, maps, or store hours.
Now, here’s the tricky bit: if Location Services are disabled, Siri may not function optimally — or it may default to fallback behaviour that’s less precise or, yes, less convenient. Unfortunately, there’s currently no toggle to tell Siri: “Only use location when I specifically ask for something near me.”
If you’d prefer not to share your location permanently, here’s a workaround:
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Siri & Dictation
- Set it to “While Using the App” rather than “Always”
- This way, Siri can access your location only when you actually use it, giving you a bit more control
Totally fair point though — many users would welcome more nuance in how Siri handles location requests. It’s worth leaving feedback directly via Settings > Siri & Search > Siri Feedback — Apple does pay attention to usage trends.
Hope that helps clear things up a bit. Let me know how it goes!
