Open Word doc from email, and avoid M365 subscription offer

A mate was sent a Word doc in an email. He has an iPad with iOS 18.5.

When he tries to open it, he is offered a free trial of M365.

How can he open the Word doc in Pages, and get around the free trial offer?

I have no problem opening the Word doc in Pages on a MacBook Pro.

Many thanks,

David

To open an MS Word document in Apple Pages, begin by launching the Pages App - and then simply locate (and open) the target App from the opening (orange) file-browser screen.

MS Productivity Apps for iPad (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint) offer limited functionality without an Office 365 Subscription - but only for devices with a screen size of 10.1” or less. Devices with larger screens only permit you to view (but not create or edit) an existing document. Full App functionality requires an active Office 365 Subscription.

Hi, thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

In Mail on MacOS, there's a context menu where I can choose Pages to open the attachment. Is there something similar in Mail for iOS? If not, is there a way to set the default app to open .doc and .docx files as Pages in iOS?

If neither are possible, I guess that my mate would have to first save the attachment to Files on iPad, then open Pages and find the saved attachment?

To open Microsoft documents using native Apple Apps, you must first save the document, open the appropriate/corresponding Apple App (Pages for MS Word, Numbers for MS Excel, Keynote for MS PowerPoint) and open the document from within the App.

If the associated MS Apps are installed on the device, the MS document can be opened directly for viewing. If you have an active MS365 subscription, full App functionality becomes available.

Where third-party Apps are installed, iOS/iPadOS offers no other mechanism to open non-native document types by default within native Apps.
