Is my iPhone 16e battery health normal?

I got my brand new iPhone 16e four days ago. So far the battery life does seem very good and much better than my previous iPhone 11.

However, I am still unsure if the way the battery drops is healthy/normal or not? I am getting conflicting information online. The battery capacity is still 100% because it’s new.

I don’t use low power mode when I use my phone. I also only charge it to 85% to preserve battery health. My battery drops to 15-30% after around 12 hours, with around 6 of those hours involving actual usage. Typically moderate usage and very consistent, or constant light usage. Nothing too advanced or draining at all.

Today I charged my phone to 85% at 8:23pm and used it for 2 hours tops. If I remember correctly, it dropped to 70% after those 2 hours. Then for 8 hours it was left on, cellular data on too, but not used at all. When I got on my phone again it was around 50-60% (I can’t remember what percentage) and dropped quickly to 48%.

When I use my phone, usually I am just looking things up on safari, texting/using discord, watching and maybe downloading a few TikToks, and listening to music. Not all at once typically.

I just wanted to know if this battery health seems to be normal (this is also mostly estimation and guessing, I might be very wrong about the hours and whether my usage is actually moderate)

Something that may interest you, right after you setup a new iPhone, it must re-index all of your data. Indexing is the process of creating and sorting a searchable database of all your content on your iPhone, such as messages, photos, mail and more. Your iPhone must also install new features, such as Apple Intelligence. Those will temporarily cause the iPhone to work harder and as a result drain more battery. When the tasks are complete your iPhone will return to normal conditions.

By the way, you may want to read my User Tip on Charge Limits vs Optimized Battery Charging. You will find that charge limits aren’t necessarily the best habit for charging.

To be honest I would give it a good 4 days to settle down after restore to complete any indexing. Two days is not enough time.

Discord and TikTok are both power hungry apps along with any Meta apps you have installed. They also have Background Processes that continue to use the battery even when you are not using the app. All you need to do is view how much Battery they are using over the Last 24 hours by going to Settings > Battery and scroll towards the bottom.

You will see a Battery Usage by percentage and can tap on Show Activity to show the actual time that you were using the apps. Some app will show a high percentage with little use time, which means that it is that app that is causing the most amount of your battery loss. You always have the option of deleting a power hungry app and comparing your results, and reinstalling it if you wish.

Your goal should be to get all day battery life, then charge your phone all night, every night so it will be ready for you again in the morning. The choice is yours on whether you use the Charge Limit or Optimized Charging. Optimized charging is best used when you have a regular schedule in the morning when you take your phone off the charger. With Optimized Charging the phone will charge to 100% just before you normally take it off the charger and the Charge Limit will always start your day at the 85% or whatever level you choose. I have seen zero studies on the effect to Battery Health with either option or even an attempt to quantify battery life expectancy as a comparison.

One last tip, I would recommend performing a Force Restart since you just updated your new phone and restored from a backup. It may take a couple of attempts to get the speed and sequence of the key presses correct.

  • Press and release volume up quickly
  • Press and release volume down quickly
  • Press and HOLD side button until Apple Logo appears. This may take up to 15 seconds before you see the Apple Logo and you will want to ignore anything else on the screen during that time.

Those are actually lower on the list for my battery usage. This is the last 6 days. Also, I fall asleep around 3/4am and stay up on my phone during that time and only charge my phone when I wake up later (like 7-10 hours later) so some of the hours and battery usage are not related to after the phone has been charged for the rest of the day that I will be using it

All of my data has been transferred from my old phone and all my apps are downloaded + photos. Including new IOS and iPhone 16 model features. It has been 2 days since this has completed I believe? Would the battery still be affected though?

It can most definitely take longer. Just because the iPhone is done being setup doesn’t mean it’s done indexing, which will runs in the background. Updates can also cause this. You’ll likely see in your iPhones Battery Graph that “Home and Lock Screen”, “Photos”, are taking up a lot of battery. That’s normal and are the largest indexing tasks.

Give it a couple more days and definitely do the Force Restart. The Photos and Home & Lock Screen activity does look like there is still indexing going on in the background. Photos is doing object detection and tagging meta data as it scans your photo library in the background. There is no set time that it takes as it depends on the size of your Photo Library and performs quicker when it it plugged into power.

Since it does not sound like you are on a regular schedule, then Optimized Charging would work not for you as that does require you to take it off the charger at about the same time every day. There is nothing wrong with the Charge Limit, just remember that you are also limiting your daily usage by 15% when the limit is set at 85%.

After a couple of days post the same screen shot again and include the graph to get an idea on the rate of drop that you are seeing. Instagram is doing surprisingly well for you as that has also been seen problematic in the past, but they did have an update 4 days ago that may have improved performance. Google called them out a week ago for causing poor battery performance on Android phones as well and Meta promised a fix, so hopefully that has been done for the iPhone app as well.

One other thing I noticed that will have an effect on decreased battery performance is the 5G connection. With only 1 bar showing, your phone must use more power to maintain that connection. Your previous iPhone 11 did not support 5G and 5G does use more power and the amount of power needed increases even more the farther away you are from that tower.
