Mac Mini M4 ethernet speeds capped at 310 mbps

Hey. The Mini M4 won’t go beyond 310 mbps (or thereabouts) when downloading. Windows PCs on Ethernet get to 540 mbps. Tried changing the cables (all are new) and the Mac Ethernet cable gives the windows devices 540 mbps. Windows machines Ethernet cables restricts the Mac, like all other cables I’ve tried.

I’ve tried the usual stuff e.g. changing the Mac network settings to manual etc and have tried three new Ethernet cables. All give the windows machines 540 mbps and the Mac no more than approximately 310 mbps.

PS: there is nothing plugged into the Mac other than the HDMI and power cable. The mini is the basic (16/256).

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Try this.

Go into System Settings > Network > Ethernet and click on the Details… button. Then click on Hardware in the sidebar of the window that appears. Look for a setting on the right-hand side called AVB/EAV mode.

My understanding is that turning this switch on enables support for a standard that prioritizes Audio Video Bridging traffic over other types of Ethernet traffic. If you are not using your Ethernet port in this way, having AVB/EAV mode enabled could be interfering with the performance you get for other uses, with no benefit to you.

In that case, you might want to turn AVB/EAV mode off.

Thanks rkaufmann87, appreciate the quick response. I should have said, it’s a work machine and the team are pretty strict on what can be installed and shared. Impressive resource though, I’d never heard of EtreCheck before so thank you.

Contact your IT group, then.

This just became their problem to research.

Could well be caused by something IT has installed, for instance.

Or could be an Apple bug, for that matter.

EtreCheck helps us see the configuration, so we’re not asking a thousand questions and explaining how to retrieve each.
