Using 87W Power Adapter for MacBook Pro 2020 A2338 13in M1

I have just purchased a MacBook Pro 2020 A2338 13in M1 which will arrive in two days without a power adapter. I have an A1719 87W USB-C power adapter and would like to use it as a replacement for the standard 61W power adapter but want to make sure it is safe to do so. Any advice would be appreciated.

Learn which power adapter and cable comes with your Mac laptop and how to check the wattage of a connected power adapter or display. Refer to this article --> Identify your Mac power adapter - Apple Support

"If your Mac uses USB-C to charge, you can charge your Mac laptop with any USB-C power adapter or display. You can safely use a power adapter or display with higher or lower wattage than the adapter included with your Mac. For the best charging experience, you should use the power adapter and cable included with your MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or MacBook."

You can use a compatible higher wattage adapter without issue, but it won't make your computer charge faster or operate differently. Lower wattage adapters will not provide enough power during normal computer use. They may charge if the computer is not in use, but charging will be slower. If a more powerful charger is used then as long as the voltage is correct the excess wattage does not matter. The computer will use as much as it is designed to use and ignore the rest.
