How do I fix 2011 iMac booting issues with external SSD?

Hi everyone so I have a 21.5" iMac and the hard drive just died. So, I bought a 512 GB 2.5" SSD. The thing is, I couldn't install High Sierra (the most recent version of macOS it can run) directly on it because I have faulty USB ports after years of using. So, I installed High Sierra on the SSD via my Macbook Air. Setting the SSD up so it can be APFS and partitioned properly as macOS High Sierra installed. I tried booting the external SSD on my Macbook and it boot up. So, when I installed it on my iMac, the first time booting it up, I thought it would load up immediately but when the Apple logo vanished and the status bar vanished it just went into a blank white screen. Tried it a second time then the iMac kept on boot looping. Then for the third time is the current problem now, the status bar is frozen and it's not doing anything. I'm sorry if I offend some people right now because this is the first time I'm upgrading the iMac since my dad bought it and it's still salvageable as a browsing computer so I really like to fix it.

When you install macOS, it installs hardware drivers required for the specific model Mac on which it is installed. I suspect the reason the iMac is not booting from that SSD is due to its lack of correct drivers. If I had to guess from your description, it's boot looping upon loading or attempting to load GPU-specific drivers that don't work on the iMac.

Since you have a MBA that boots High Sierra, you can use it to create a "bootable USB installer" that can be used to install High Sierra on the iMac. Instructions: Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support. Try that.

Oh and one more thing. If the subject iMac is a "mid 2011" model, booting from its original, grey, System Install DVD will make life much easier for you. Those two discs must accompany the Macs they shipped with from cradle to grave. Booting from it will install its originally installed operating system which can then be subsequently upgraded to High Sierra.

If it is a "late 2011" model (initially sold in August of that year) they fall into kind of a no-man's land with installing High Sierra. Workarounds exist so write back if you get that far.

Find out which of those two variants you have. If it's the earlier of the two, make it your mission in life to find those discs.

As far as a "browsing computer" goes expect some significant challenges with High Sierra.

There may be workarounds

Yes, there are. A 2011 iMac can get around the browser problems by using these :

Chromium Legacy built on Chrome 127 (not being updated further but fine for now):

However, to make this work in High Sierra you need to get it directly from the GitHub project page; in my opinion you'd be a lot better using this:

Firefox Dynasty (constantly being updated with build based on latest Firefox):

I'm running High Sierra on a 2017 iMac and can browse anything I want, and stream DRM content.
