Rapid battery drain in MacBook Air

Battery drained from around 50% to 0% from 9pm to 12pm the next day. This is too fast. Low power mode was on too. Any suggestions?

Leaving the computer plugged in will not damage the computer or the battery. The MacOS manages the power/charging system very well so there is no need for you to micro manage theses systems.

@hwtech

Please see an exerpt from the really long log - we seem to be getting somewhere but if you would be so kind, I would appreciate your help in interpreting it (included sleep log in this post at the end).

I'm not sure if it's the same thing as an SMC Outbox, but I've cleared out an unsent mail in the Mail app outbox to see if that makes a difference.

Also, I have this setting so it should only do the wake when on power adapter anyway as far as I'm understanding the setting intention.

Nothing should be running on the laptop when it's closed and sleeping.

Sleeping is just a suggestion. Any apps that are currently running can sometimes override the sleep functionality. Or maybe the laptop never actually entered Sleep Mode.

See if activating "Sleep" from the Apple menu makes any difference.

When I was helping a co-worker figure out a similar issue with their personal laptop, I discovered it appeared to be related to iCloud syncing of photos overnight.

You can try running the following Terminal command to view whether the laptop actually enters sleep mode and what triggers it to wake up:

pmset -g log | grep -iE 'Sleep |Wake '

FYI, there are two & only two spaces after "Sleep " & "Wake " in that command. It would be best to just copy & paste it into the Terminal since those two & only two spaces are critical to properly filter out the most relevant items in the log, otherwise you will be either overwhelmed with unnecessary & confusing entries, or you will not receive the proper ones at all.

I avoid leaving the power adapter charged in because that accelerates battery ageing.

By default recent versions of macOS now have Optimized Charging enabled which will exercise the Battery when the laptop is on the power adapter. Here is an Apple article regarding Optimized Charging:

To the moderator: why did you remove from the title that stated this occurs during sleeping? It is reducing the quality of people's responses because they don't have the correct context...

Yeah, that is something the regular contributors have been discussing with Apple for a while now. I'll bring it to Apple's attention since this is a great example of a poorly edited title.

Since it was a steady gradual drain, it seems normal. Something was running on the laptop during that time to cause it to drain.

If you can use the power adapter, then connect it so the laptop will be ready when you next use it.

Edit: Another option would be to power off the laptop when not in use if you are not able to use the power adapter.

It should.

The sleep log excerpt you posted is very helpful. It recorded a loss of 2% over the course of 9 hours 15 minutes and does not indicate anything amiss during that time. Unless something changes radically there is no reason to believe there is anything wrong with that Mac or its battery.
