Is there a workaround to print music from a Brother laserjet on a Macbook Air without Wi-Fi?

Printer has worked perfectly for 20 years to print music. I now have a macbook air with Sonoma 14.6.1 and Brother says there is no driver. It works perfectly fine with my Win 11 computer.

I would not have bought the mac if I had known it would make it impossible to print (I print music, mostly, and the laserjet is great because it can set for several months and the "ink" does not dry up.

Is there a workaround? I have wired connections, and I don't have or want wifi in my house.

If you are still using that Win 11 computer, perhaps you can configure it to "share" that printer. That way, whatever driver the Brother printer requires will remain resident on that computer. The Mac does not require any.

I know almost nothing about Windows PCs but I use a similar workaround with an older Mac connected to an even older printer (it's about forty years old). Find the equivalent Windows method to Share your printer on Mac - Apple Support.

If you are averse to Wi-Fi for whatever reason then you will need to connect the respective computers to your network over Ethernet. Leave the Brother printer connected to the Win 11 computer (USB, I assume).

That's your workaround.

Brother – HL2170W Printer

If I read the FAQ entries correctly, they indicate:

  • No plans to release drivers for Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, or Sonoma. No mention of Sequoia.
  • No plans to release separate drivers for Windows 10 or 11 for ARM. You must use the drivers built into Windows, even if they don't support all of the printer's features.
  • No support for Windows 11 for Intel-based PCs.

Brother – HL-2170W – Supported OS is consistent with this. No mention of Windows 11 or of any version of macOS later than Catalina.

The printer doesn't support AirPrint.

About AirPrint - Apple Support

Looks like it came out about a year and a half before AirPrint did, going by the 6/25/2009 release date for the User's Guide on the Brother site. (If the printer had AirPrint support, macOS wouldn't need separate drivers to print to it.)

By “wired” connection do you mean USB? And is it only music you can’t print or does nothing print? With a USB cable connected to the printer from the MacBook have you tried adding the printer to your MacBook.

MacBook->System Settings->Printers & Scanners->Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax->your printer should appear as available to add.

Finally, you might check with Brother. There is no reason the vast majority of printers out there shouldn’t work with you MacBook.

Getting Printer to Work with Drivers:

A. Provide the Printer Model:

So, what's the printer model? Providing that, you might be able to get a link to the drivers you need.

B. Use a Virtual Machine:

Using Virtual Machine software, you can install printer drivers and other software, running Windows-in-a-window. VMWare Fusion and Parallels are two examples of these.

PCL6 emulation is mentioned in the specifications, so if the macOS 10.15 Catalina driver suggested by lkrupp does not work, you could perhaps check whether a macOS generic PCL driver can be used.
