Mac Pro 6, 1 (Late 2013) is constantly restarting and getting error as "Your computer restarted because of a problem"

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone might be able to shed light on an issue I’m having with my late 2013 Mac Pro (12-core, 64GB RAM, 512GB SSD, macOS Monterey 12.7.6).

Lately, the machine has been restarting unexpectedly. It doesn’t seem to happen during any particular activity — my usage is fairly light overall, with the most demanding app I regularly use being Lightroom, and even that not daily.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • SMC reset
  • PRAM reset
  • Erased and clean-installed macOS Monterey
  • Swapped in the original Apple SSD
  • Brought it to an Apple Store (in Paris), where a RAM-related issue was suspected
  • Tried multiple RAM combinations in different slots
  • Installed new RAM from OWC
  • Ran extended memory tests overnight (no issues reported)
  • Used EtreCheck (no major flags)
  • Ran CPU stress tests (Cinebench, Heaven, etc. – all completed without crashing)
  • Reapplied thermal paste and thoroughly cleaned the machine internally

Temperatures seem fine — usually under 70°C, and I use a fan control app to help manage thermals.

After each unexpected shutdown, I receive the “Your computer restarted because of a problem” message. There’s no clear pattern, and no heavy usage at the time of crash.

I’ve read similar reports from other Mac Pro owners, and in one case, a user traced it to the CPU. I’ve sourced a replacement CPU and plan to install it soon to see if it helps.

If anyone has run into something similar or has ideas I haven’t considered, I’d be grateful. I understand this machine is getting older (purchased in 2015), but I’ve always loved it and would like to keep it running smoothly for as long as possible.

Thanks in advance!

I'll continue to provide any updates here (as long as it remains open) as I know from experience that these threads show up on Google and can be helpful even when they're out of date and no longer active..

Considering the pace in which Apple products evolve, Google search results tend to be very outdated, but so is your Mac Pro. Ten year old posts will still be relevant 😄

I'll ask a Community Manager to relocate this thread to Mac Pro - Apple Community. You don't need to do anything — you will be notified of any additional replies automatically.

The replacement CPU ought to be as good as ever. Intel's only references to the "Machine Check" error just indicate a fatal internal fault, which should never occur with properly functioning CPU. There is nothing else anyone can do other than to replace it. For $16 perhaps you should buy a spare or two.

Your 'error report after automatic reboot' in your first posting is unmistakably a RAM memory error.

These Macs feature horizontal error correction and detection. there is no need to run overnight test.

this part, especially detected 29 banks is the big tip-off:

I went with a seller I found from China - i'm not really sure how else to source these now ancient CPUs in the EU. I opted for the e5 2667 v2 (8-core 3.3ghz ) as I think it'll provide good balance between single core while still being pretty robust for heavier work. Across various sites (with near 100% reviews) the going rates seemed to range anywhere from 15-30 euros for this chip - amazing how things have changed!

Here's hoping I can keep this machine alive and that it does the trick - thanks again for your insights.

That fault is internal to the CPU. It is replaceable.

Thanks for correcting my oversight. I'm just so used to responding to laptop issues, that I missed this was a Desktop system.

UPDATE:

For anyone who stumbles upon this thread and has been receiving similar error messages and has a Mac Pro 2013 that's been constantly restarting, I can cautiously say that replacing the CPU seems to have done the trick.

The system has been stable for the last 5+ hours without any restarts (KNOCK ON WOOD). I've been throwing a lot at it and so far so good. (Prior to this it was restarting every 5-10 minutes, so I'm not out of the woods, but I'm hopeful)

So far, the Mac Pro seems to be quite happy with the E5-2667V2 8-core 3.3 ghz CPU that I've installed :)

If any admin see this and wants to move it to the Mac Pro category I'd be grateful - I'm not sure how it got posted into "Earlier Operating Systems".

Thanks
