FaceTime camera stays on after manual launch on MacBook Pro with Sequoia 15.5

Recently updated to M4MBP from my trusty old Intel. On my old machine Facetime would launch on startup. Then, if anyone called I would be notified and could accept or decline through the app. If I accepted, the camera would turn on. However on the new machine Facetime is not automatically launched at starrtup so i dont get notified of incoming calls. But if i launch Facetime manually my camera turns on and stays on (including staying on after a call is completed, which is a bit disconcerting). None of the online problem solving suggestions seem to align with my system configuration (Sequoia 15.5, Facetime 36). Anyone else experienced this? is there a configuration that i have missed?
