Airpod pro 2 won't update

So I have Airpods Pro 2. They are on version 5B58. Have tried for days to update them to a new version and they won't. I have followed all the Apple forums telling us how to update them and it still will not work. I contacted Apple support for help. After hours of talking with them and still not getting them updated they want to CHARGE me $273 for repair. First off, that is an obscene amount considering I can buy a new pair for that much. Not to mention this is a defective product. I should not have to pay for a repair when your product does not work as advertised. I did everything that was asked of me. They work and are not damaged. This is an Apple problem, I should not be responsible for this.
