Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Help me understand, please.

—What version of Word? I have 16.97.2.

—Are the super-/sub-script icons still showing in the Word toolbar?:

—Does the options show if you do command-d?

—Are the icons there but nothing happens when you click them?

—Have you created any formatting shortcuts in Word's Quick Access Toolbar?

Normally I would refer you to MS Support but I've been using Word for Mac since V3 or V4 and recently got the latest versions. Hopefully we can we can help and not have to send you to the Microsoft Support Morass!

Pages has never been a Word clone and the invocation of baseline shifts for super/subscript are entirely different.

In Word (e.g. 16.84 thru 16.97.2) it is applied in the ribbon bar as shown in the image provided by Allan Jones, or the keyboard shortcuts:

⇧⌘+ superscript

⇧⌘- subscript

In Pages v14.4 these are on the Format menu > Font > Baseline sub-menu choices, or their keyboard shortcuts on a U.S. English extended keyboard:

^⇧⌘+ superscript (contrary to Apple's keyboard shortcut documentation showing ^⌘+)

^⌘- subscript
