How do I get Spoken Content on iPad to read bullet points correctly?

When using spoken content on my iPad some of the Pdf's I use have bullet points in them. No matter how I try to substitute it Spoken content always reads it as "Black small square".

How do I change this or get it to stop?

I would like to listen to my files without the odd interruption.

If this isn't what you have already tried: Apple support's online article:

Hear iPad speak the screen, selected text, and typing feedback - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"Change how Spoken Content sounds

  1. Go to Settings  > Accessibility > Spoken Content.
  2. Adjust
  • Pronunciations: Dictate or spell out how you want certain phrases to be spoken.

Hope this helps :-)

Wondering just what you have tried:

eg: have you tried putting "bullet point" as pronunciation for "small black square"

or

you may have tried using a different default symbol (eg: black dot) for your bullet points to see whether or not that is recognised. (Different apps may use different symbols for a bullet point.)

Many folks use the asterisk * keyboard symbol for each bullet point. (Sorry I'm not sure how Spoken Content on iPad handles that, as no iPad on hand at the moment.)

Another option may be to use VoiceOver to have text read aloud .... as it is gesture-based that may be more complex to learn, yet there are various controls and customisations that can be made ... eg: you can "Change how VoiceOver speaks punctuation"
