How Apple has handled widgets has changed over the years.
The very first Mac, introduced in 1984, had support for Desk Accessories. Back in those days there was no support for multitasking (running two applications at the same time), but the Desk Accessories let you bring up things like a basic Calculator at the same time as your one application.
Dashboard was a feature introduced in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and removed in macOS 10.15 (Catalina). I believe that Big Sur, Monterey, and Ventura do not support widgets at all. Sonoma and Sequoia support widgets, but instead of being shown in the (still-discontinued) Dashboard, they are integrated into the Desktop.
