Connect display and audio interface through a Thunderbolt Dock on Mac Studio M4 Max

Hi guys, I currently have a 2013 Trashcan Mac Pro that is connected to 5 displays (1080p 60hz TVs) in which 3 are connected using the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter, 1 using a regular Mini DisplayPort to HDMI, and 1 using the native HDMI output on the back.

Along with the displays I have a Thunderbolt Apollo 16 Audio Interface connected, totaling 5 Thunderbolt ports used of all 6 available.

Now I plan to upgrade to a Mac Studio M4 Max, and the specs say I can connect 5 displays using the TB5 ports + HDMI Port on the back.

Now my question is: Can I connect 1 of the displays and my audio interface on the same TB port using a Thunderbolt Dock?

So 3 displays are directly into the TB ports (using TB to HDMI adapters), 1 through native HDMI port and 1 sharing the port with the Apollo interface on the TB Dock.

Many thanks to anyone who could help

In this case I’m even thinking of getting two of these so I connect 4 displays on 2 Thunderbolt ports, 1 for the Apollo, and still have the 4th one for other peripherals.

Two other devices that might be of interest:

SonnetTech – Echo 5 Thunderbolt 4 Hub ($130)

Other World Computing – OWC Thunderbolt Hub ($100)

These are very similar compact hubs that offer three downstream Thunderbolt ports, and a USB-A port. They would require wall power, and separate USB-C to HDMI adapters or adapter cables. But you'd have one open downstream Thunderbolt port for a device like an external SSD.

As far as I know, the rules for Thunderbolt 3 and 4 ports are that a Mac that supports multiple displays can drive

  • One display with a resolution of 5K or 6K, or
  • Up to two displays with resolutions of up to 4K each

over a single Thunderbolt port.

So if your 1080p display and your Apollo 16 Audio Interface are both compatible with the Mac Studio, connecting them through a Thunderbolt dock should be fine.

The M4 Max Mac Studio has Thunderbolt 5 ports that theoretically could drive up to three displays (when using a Thunderbolt 5 hub, dock, or multi-display adapter). However a note on the Other World Computing site indicates that Apple has not yet enabled support for this "three displays per host port" possibility.

"Thunderbolt 5 is capable of supporting up to three displays from a single computer host port dependent on the host computer's capability. This includes up to three 6K or lower resolution displays, three 8K displays @ 60Hz, or two 8K displays @ 120Hz. For example, presently Apple has only enabled support for a maximum of up to two native displays per connected Apple Mac Thunderbolt host port."

Sure. the Audio interface data is almost negligible compared to the Display data and will just be stuffed in between display data. but you need a Hub (Docking device) or a display that has a built-in Hub.

<< using a Thunderbolt Dock? >>

yes, that works

If you have a Thunderbolt-3 or higher or certain types of USB-C Displays, the data can be combined using the display's USB Hub to break out the USB-C data for the Audio interface.

if the screen sizes are low enough, under certain conditions you may be able to connect as many as TWO displays on one ThunderBolt-3 or higher cable. the first device must be a genuine ThunderBolt-3 or higher Display or Dock. USB-C cables, adapters, and Docks can NOT support two displays ON A MAC.

Do you think this Thunderbolt adapter would work to connect the 2 displays (TVs) to 1 of the Thunderbolt ports in this case?

Looks like it.

That's an Amazon listing for a "SonnetTech Thunderbolt Dual HDMI 2.1 Adapter."

Here's the description of the product on the manufacturer's Web site.

SonnetTech – Thunderbolt Dual 4K HDMI 2.1 Adapter

As far as I can tell, this is a genuine Thunderbolt product – not a plain USB-C one with a description claiming that it is "Thunderbolt-compatible". SonnetTech is one of several vendors which have made Thunderbolt products for Mac users for a long time (Other World Computing and CalDigit being two others) – so although I do not have any personal experience with their products, they would be on my "short list" of "go-to" vendors.

If you drill down to the Technical Specifications on the SonnetTech site, they also look promising.

It does seem that it would work indeed.

In this case I’m even thinking of getting two of these so I connect 4 displays on 2 Thunderbolt ports, 1 for the Apollo, and still have the 4th one for other peripherals.

Anyways, thank you guys for helping me figure this out. I’ll try it out as soon as I get the Mac Studio and give some feedback
